Maintenance Tips for Your Sewing Machine

Posted on

Owning a sewing machine for personal use can afford you a lot of freedom in repairing your clothes and coming up with DIY designs for Halloween, special occasions, and gifts. However, just as all other major appliances, a sewing machine requires regular maintenance to keep it running in optimal condition. Due to the intricacies of how these appliances work, they are prone to requiring sewing machine repairs if they are not being handled appropriately. It should be noted that serious sewing machine problems should always be tackled by a professional technician so as to prevent the risk of further damaging your appliance. If you would like to reduce the occurrence of sewing machine repairs, here are some handy maintenance tips you could use.

Regularly unclog the sewing machine

Since your sewing machine primarily deals with fabrics of different kinds, it is not uncommon for the fibres to make their way into the machinery. This is especially common with extended periods of usage. It is recommended to always inspect the sewing machine's bobbin and chamber for any loose thread or fabric fibres that have made their way there. These can easily be removed using tweezers to pull them out. If the fibres are numerous, then you should consider investing in a handheld vacuum to specifically remove these fibres on a regular basis.

Regularly oil and tighten the movable parts of the sewing machine

Another maintenance measure that some people tend to overlook is oiling and tightening of the movable parts in their sewing machine. Just like any other appliance that comprises movable parts, you will find that screws and bolts can come loose over time. This is because sewing machines will vibrate when in use and these vibrations, even slight ones, will cause loosening of these parts. It should be noted though that oiling of your movable parts should only be done once you have eliminated all fibres from the internal components of the appliance. Once you are done with the lubrication, tighten the screws but take note not to overdo it or this will cause resistance in your sewing machine.

Give the sewing machine time to cool off

Another maintenance measure when it comes to avoiding unnecessary sewing machine repairs would be to give your appliance time to cool off. Although sewing machines are durable and sturdy, they are not immune to overheating when they are overworked. Regular overheating can compromise the functionality of your sewing machine. It can even pose the risk of fire if the overheating occurs when there are fibres clogged in the appliance. As such, it is always best to give your sewing machine a break when you have been using it for an extended period of time.
