DIY Fixes for Common Air Conditioning Problems

Posted on

Your air conditioning unit is designed to effectively cool your home during the warmest months. However, you might begin to notice that there is an issue with your air conditioner that needs to be corrected. Before you call an HVAC professional, there are a few DIY tips that you can follow. Some of the more common problems with your air conditioning unit can be corrected on your own with a few simple steps and tools.

Condenser

If you notice that the condenser on your AC unit is not working, you should begin by turning the power to your unit off and then on. It is also possible that you could be dealing with a blown use, so you need to check the fuse to your AC. A tripped circuit breaker is often the cause of a condenser that is not running. If this does not correct the problem, you can make sure that the thermostat is set properly and even try lowering it by a few degrees to see if the condenser will then kick on. It is only after you have tried the methods that you will likely need to call an HVAC professional to deal with a faulty motor or a failing compressor.

Evaporator

If you start to notice that your house is not as cool as it normally is when your AC unit is working, you should begin diagnosing the problem by checking the evaporator. The likely cause of your AC unit not cooling your home down efficiently is an evaporator that has become dirty. If you clean the evaporator, you should notice that your home is cooler. Keep in mind that extremely hot days might result in your home being warmer than normal. You may need to turn your thermostat down a few degrees to combat these temperatures.

Off and On

There is also an issue if you begin to notice that your AC unit will turn off and on repeatedly. This is not normal and often involves an issue with the condenser or the evaporator. This means that you need to make sure that you give the evaporator a good cleaning and make sure that you get rid of any weeds or grass that could be blocking your condenser. You need to make sure that you clean your AC unit regularly as a part of the maintenance routine that will ensure that it functions properly for long periods.
